RLC / INPUT RLC stands for Ribbon-Like Chapel, a proposal for a competition design held by Reuse Italy Concept The masterplan defines a scattered village inspired by the surrounding scenery. An inspiration that has manifested itself in both the specific design of the complex and the use of sustainable materials (timber, natural stone and recycled steel beams), landscaping and in the way the architecture supports pilgrim's experience, both indoors and outdoors. The amphitheater, together with the church, determine a centripetal force that generates the dispersion of buildings and defines the apparently random geography of the village. As if it were a point where you can recover your energy and then gain momentum to start walking again, a stage of the journey that works as an energy recharger. San Giovanni in Val di Lago The new vault has a stereometric shape . The main idea is to recall the appearance of the original volume without actually reconstructing it. The new dome, defined in this way, also recalls, metaphorically, the linear nature of the journey. The value of the place is given by the transformations over time. And even the absence of the roof is part of that memory. The wooden ribs allow to define the roof as if it were a gigantic chandelier : the new stereometric dome bears the skylight, the tensile structure and the lighting (view renders below). In this way the natural lighting remains essentially as it is now, although the comfort is improved and qualified to host religious functions or simply a more comfortable visit. On the ground level, a simple wooden floor completes the intervention. On the outside there is a circular basement made of stone that surrounds the church, since the church itself has a typical Renaissance structure with a central plan. The Amphitheater The Amphitheater, with its maximum diameter of 40m, is the second focal point of the project and provides a space for the show but also an elevated point of view that allows you to see the lake and the surroundings, with its orientation facing South. With its circular shape It recalls the nearby church and the ancient structure of the Greek theater. It is connected to the rest of the buildings through a series of paths which accentuate the perspective of the whole complex. Landscape The planting of various tree species and shrubs is one of the primary ingredients of the project. The main idea is to define the area through the presence of dense vegetation to provide a pleasant stop. Filling the project area with a landscaping approach, due to the natural vocation of the context, was the guideline of the creative process. The church of San Giovanni rises in the middle of a bucolic context so the massive use of greenery also serves to camouflage the sudden increase in built volumes. The tree species chosen are those typical of the Mediterranean scrub, oaks (Lecci, Sughere), Juniperos, Laurus, Cytisus scoparius, Oleander, Rosmarinus, Lentiscus, Corbezzolo, etc. Pilgrim Accomodation The project finally involves the construction of various forms of housing (the pilgrim accommodation), distributed in a village-like system , for an additional total of approximately 500m^3. These accommodations allow the simultaneous and permanent presence of about 30 people and they are structured in different types. There are single and multiple rooms and a dedicated refectory where all pilgrims can share food during the stage. RFI/LED / INPUT ENG - After the demolition of the finger connecting the western tower with Terminal 3 , the airport authority decided to renew the façade, now free from the bridge element. In agreement with the communication area managers, it was decided to create a façade that uses a so-called ledwall system. The tower is the intersection between airport traffic and the railway network, therefore it constitutes a point of intense flow of people, one of the most overcrowded areas of the entire airport area. The design process, considering the importance and complexity of the place, involved the careful study of the current situation, the feasibility analysis of the insertion of the new façade system, through numerous types of geometrical and load simulation. The facade is composed of a 5x14 matrix of LED panels for a total length of twenty meters and a height of five meters. Each LED panel weighs about ninety kilograms. The façade is oriented north-northwest, so the visibility of the images will be possible even in daylight conditions. RFI/LED is a new Infotainment facade system for the western tower of the Leonardo da Vinci Airport. The main purpose of the project is to contribute to the achievement of a new aesthetic standard for the largest Italian airport and one of the largest in Europe, recently awarded at the World Airport Awards. The idea is to create a new dramatic facade in collaboration with Informasistemi, using the already established Ledwall technique. You can ideally enjoy the experience at an airport by listening to Brian Eno's Music for Airports (1978) or something from the Blade Runner OST by Vangelis . That was the cultural premise for the discussion of the project. Essentially the key concept is the distortion of the notions of Space and Time. This is what normally happens in an airport: the sense of alienation, which is both exciting and disturbing. Today the airport has come out of its limits and has become a paradigm and precursor of what Koolhaas calls a Generic City . You can eat flavors from all over the world. You can speak languages from all over the world. You can see images of the places you are about to reach or from which you have just returned. ITA - Dopo la demolizione del finger che collega la torre ovest con il Terminal 3, l'autorità aeroportuale ha deciso di rinnovare la facciata, ora libera dall'elemento ponte. D'intesa con i responsabili dell'area comunicazione, si è deciso di realizzare una facciata che utilizzi un cosiddetto sistema ledwall. La torre è l'intersezione tra il traffico aeroportuale e la rete ferroviaria, costituisce quindi un punto di intenso afflusso di persone, una delle zone più sovraffollate dell'intera area aeroportuale. L'iter progettuale, considerata l'importanza e la complessità del luogo, ha comportato l'attento studio della situazione attuale, l'analisi di fattibilità dell'inserimento del nuovo sistema di facciata, attraverso numerose tipologie di simulazione geometrica e di carico. La facciata è composta da una matrice 5x14 di pannelli LED per una lunghezza totale di venti metri e un'altezza di cinque metri. Ogni pannello LED pesa circa novanta chilogrammi. La facciata è orientata nord-nordovest, quindi la visibilità delle immagini sarà possibile anche in condizioni di luce diurna. PANOPTICON / INPUT ENG - Nemrut Volcano Eyes is an international competition launched by Beebreeders. FROM THE ORGANISER. This competition tasked participants with envisioning a visitor observation platform to be constructed atop Nemrut, a volcano located in eastern Turkey. Positioned at an altitude of 2,800 metres at the southern edge of the dormant volcano, the intent of this new landmark is to provide unobstructed views overlooking the extraordinary caldera and its internal lakes, as well as the immense Lake Van to the east. A caldera is a large depression formed when the ground surface collapses into the emptied magma chamber following a volcanic eruption, becoming a crater. With a total area of 4,800 hectares, and a diameter varying from 7 to 8.5 km, the Nemrut caldera is among the largest in the world. A pair of lakes within the crater - Lakes Ilı and Nemrut - support a microclimate with flora and fauna unique to the region, in part because the water bodies are fed by hot springs and never fully freeze during the winter months. FROM THE ARCHITECTS. The project consists of two main elements: the Path and the (Lookout) Point. The continuosly changing shape of the Nemrut Lake is the source of inspiration for the definition of the geometry and the aesthetics of the Point. The building echoes the half-moon shape of the lake. The Panopticon is located in a privileged spot to enjoy the surrounding panorama. It is positioned on a north-south axis to focus the visitor's attention on the two great valleys. However, due to a game of interwined uprights, people who visit the Point can enjoy a 360° view. The name Panopticon comes from the concept invented by philosopher Jeremy Bentham. Jeremy Bentham's Panopticon is an architecture with a circular shape and a single central watchtower. The Panopticon concept was developed by Bentham in 1785 as a proposal for a prison structure that would allow constant surveillance of prisoners without the need for large numbers of guards. The Panopticon concept is based on the idea that the perception of being observed can exert disciplinary power over prisoners, encouraging them to behave properly. The central watchtower was designed so that the guards could see all the prisoners, but the prisoners would not know whether they were being observed or not. Bentham's Panopticon has been described as "an architecture of surveillance," and his concept has been used to analyze and critique surveillance in modern society. Many have argued that modern technology, such as surveillance cameras and social media, expose us to a form of panoptic surveillance, where we are always under observation. --- ITA - Nemrut Volcano Eyes è una competizione internazionale lanciata da Beebreeders. DALL'ORGANIZZATORE. Questa competizione ha incaricato i partecipanti di immaginare una piattaforma di osservazione dei visitatori da costruire in cima a Nemrut, un vulcano situato nella Turchia orientale. Posizionato a un'altitudine di 2.800 metri sul bordo meridionale del vulcano dormiente, l'intento di questo nuovo punto di riferimento è quello di fornire una vista senza ostacoli sulla straordinaria caldera e sui suoi laghi interni, nonché sull'immenso Lago Van a est. Tuttavia, grazie a un gioco di montanti intrecciati, chi visita il Punto può godere di una vista a 360°. Il nome Panopticon deriva dal concetto inventato dal filosofo Jeremy Bentham. Il Panopticon di Jeremy Bentham è un'architettura di forma circolare con un'unica torre di guardia centrale.
